History of the hang-off

A cable hang-off system is designed for securing medium and high voltage power cables to the top of a foundation/cable deck in a monopile, oil rig, oil platform or jacket. The cables are threaded through using an entry system into the monopole and secured at the cable deck with a Hang-Off System. The hang-off system has to be airtight, as toxic gases are formed due to cathodic corrosion protection of the monopile and pose a health and safety risk to potential work crews on the cable decks.

When developing a Hang-Off System it has to conform and adhere to many operational requirements for offshore wind farm projects. VPI are currently on our redesigned 2nd generation of hang-off system that we have developed. Below we will share our journey into our hang-off system evolution.

VPI Hang-Off System 1.0

Developed in 2011, the original VPI HOS 1.0 was developed using a spherical shaped body which was easy and simple to install. The casted iron 1 piece hang-off system was able to fit most cable diameters using a combination of the temporary clamps, along with the final hang-off clamp to secure. However as time moved on, the sizes of the cable diameters began to vary increasingly which effected the housing body, this lead to VPI innovating the 2nd generation hang-off system.

VPI Hang-Off System 2.0

Developed in 2015, the VPI HOS 2.0 introduced a newly designed housing body to fit all possible cable diameters. Along with the new design of the cylindrical housing chamber, VPI also began to develop a variety of temporary clamps in Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large sizes, to adapt to varying diameters of the cables. However the frame of this hang-off system was formed of a welded body, which during manufacture could become time consuming, due to ensuring these frames were airtight to the project design. Due to the extra attention required for this, the welded body potentially became a less cost effective solution.

VPI Hang-Off System 2.0

VPI Hang-Off System 2.1

Developed in 2017, the VPI HOS 2.1 reverted back to the casted iron frame with the vision to develop a cost effective, easy to fit, bolt on system for our customers. The redesigned 2.1 generation hang-off system is quick and simple to install, in a variety of off the shelf sizes to ensure a fast turnaround on the entire system components. VPI have acquired the moulds for each of our developed components to ensure that our hang-off system is ready for your project design. In a variety of readily available sizes to suit all cable diameters within the industry, the VPI HOS 2.1 provides a high quality and effective hang-off system. The VPI HOS 2.1 has been tested extensively over the years to ensure the integrity and quality is up to the highest possible standard whining the industry.
